Inland Rail Corridor.
I was very pleased to hear that the Federal Government is funding a study to find the most suitable route for an inland rail corridor. The Gwydir Shire Council will be pulling out all stops to make sure that full consideration is given to the benefits of having the line go through Milguy, Crooble, Croppa Creek and North Star. The proposed inland rail line will be a massive boost to our region and the Gwydir Shire Council will be working with other Councils in the region to make sure that it becomes a reality.

Public Meetings.
Last week the Council conducted public meetings in Crooble, Croppa Creek, North Star, Coolatai and Gravesend. These meetings were well attended and issues of concern to residents were discussed. One issue that was common to all villages was the poor condition of the rubbish tips. Council staff have taken immediate action to remedy this situation and hopefully all rubbish tips will be cleaned up in a short time. On behalf of the Gwydir Shire Council I would like to apologise to the residents for the inconvenience this has caused, particularly the residents of Gravesend whose tip was a disgrace. I can assure you that we will be monitoring the condition of our rubbish tips much closer in the future.
The Councillors were encouraged by the general feeling of optimism at these meetings and were very pleased to hear that the efforts of our hard working staff are being noticed.

New Engineer.
Mr John Zannes commenced work with us as our Director of Technical Services on Thursday. One of John's first jobs will be to review all facets of the Technical Services section and make sure that it is run as efficiently as possible. I have every confidence that he is well suited for this task.

Bingara Debutante Ball.
On Saturday night I had the honour of opening the Bingara Debutante Ball. I would like to congratulate the debs and their partners on the way that they were presented. The staff at the Bingara Hospital should be very pleased with their efforts. We are very lucky to have people such as these, who make an effort to provide us with a fantastic night's entertainment as well as raising funds for the Hospital.

Warialda Races.
The Warialda Races were conducted under perfect conditions on Saturday. It was great to be among such a large crowd of people enjoying the atmosphere of a day at the races. The Warialda Jockey Club had the grounds and facilities in top order and should be very pleased with the great roll up.

Mark Coulton.
Mayor,
Gwydir Shire Council.
